We are incredibly proud of all our regional finalists who represented Oxclose today at the University of York. Each team delivered outstanding presentations, showcasing their hard work, creativity and passion to a captivated audience. Judges praised the exceptional presentation skills of our students, awarding several certificates of special commendation for ideas communicated with clarity, confidence and enthusiasm.

Our students developed thoughtful and innovative projects aimed at improving the world around them. Their commitment to environmental and social issues reflects the values we are proud to nurture at Oxclose.

Team Magical Memories focused on raising awareness and support for individuals living with dementia. Their project highlighted the importance of improving quality of life and reducing loneliness by creating dementia cafés where young people and older adults can connect and support one another.

Team Fix It Bin received special commendation from the judges for their creative and practical idea to educate primary school pupils about playground litter. Their AI‑powered robotic bin prototype was designed to clear playgrounds, reduce trip hazards and teach younger children about environmental responsibility. Judges were particularly impressed by the care and detail put into the prototype.

Team 4CL presented an ambitious and imaginative solution to tackle coral bleaching and ocean pollution. Their robotics concept transforms ocean litter into a base for coral nurseries while using technology to cool water temperatures and protect reefs before damage occurs. Their shark‑shaped robots were designed to blend naturally into marine environments. We are delighted to announce that Team 4CL were crowned winners of the North East regional final and will now progress to the national final at Westminster Palace, presenting their work to MPs alongside finalists from across the country. This is an exceptional achievement, with over 3,000 students and hundreds of team entries involved nationally.

All teams performed exceptionally well and should feel immensely proud of their achievements. There were good nerves before presenting and a real buzz afterwards as students reflected on their success.

We also encourage everyone to listen out for next Thursday’s announcement, on 21 May, when the organisers will reveal the wildcard entries for the national final. Several of our teams are strong contenders, and we are keeping everything crossed for them.

Alongside the competition, students spent the day exploring life on campus with University of York student ambassadors. They visited key facilities including STEM and environmental buildings, gaining insight into university study and opportunities. They also followed the campus art installations, learning about sculptures representing the planet and discovering the famous legacy of Long Boi, the much‑loved York duck whose story has become part of the university’s identity. A Long Boi souvenir made for a fitting end to a memorable day.

This has been a remarkable experience for all involved, and we look forward to supporting Team 4CL as they prepare for the national final in London.
