We were delighted to welcome Gillian Bell from Parliament UK to Oxclose, where she led a fascinating workshop with our Year 11 Citizenship students on how laws are created.

The session encouraged students to think critically about real issues in society and develop their own proposals for new laws. Among the excellent ideas put forward were:

  • Making university fees and expenses more affordable

  • Introducing a price cap on essential groceries

  • Placing limits on the cost of school uniforms

Students then took part in lively debates, suggested amendments to strengthen their proposals, and finally voted on whether their ideas should be carried forward. One of the highlights of the workshop was the opportunity to handle an authentic Parliamentary Bill (draft law), giving them first-hand insight into how legislation is shaped.

After the workshop, Gillian delivered an informative and engaging assembly to the students of Thames House, where she spoke about the role of Parliament and the importance of democratic participation.

The event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to gain a deeper understanding of democracy, debate, and decision-making — as well as to see how their own voices and ideas can help shape the future.
