Commemorating VE Day with a Wartime-Inspired Feast
Back
Today, Oxclose School proudly celebrated VE Day with a memorable culinary tribute, transporting students and staff back to the 1940s through a menu inspired by traditional wartime recipes. Thanks to the creativity and hard work of the school’s kitchen staff, the kitchen was transformed into a nostalgic reminder of the resilience and spirit shown during World War II.
The special VE Day menu featured:
• Corned Beef Hash
• Spam Fritters.
• Lord Woolton Pie
• All dishes were served with a traditional Carrot and Potato Mash, highlighting the era’s inventive use of homegrown produce.
To finish, there was a sweet selection that paid homage to the desserts enjoyed during rationing:
• VE Day Condensed Milk Cake
• Wartime Carrot Cookies
The event was more than just a meal; it was a learning experience that brought history to life in a flavorful and engaging way. A huge thank you goes to the kitchen staff for their hard work and dedication in making this celebration both educational and delicious.
